Good to know
When are you open?
Every day from 7:30 to 20:00. Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 9:30 and light bites from 10:00 to 17:00, with cakes, pancakes and drinks all day. Weekend high tea is served on Saturdays and Sundays from 15:00.
Do I need to book?
Not for breakfast, lunch or the bar: just arrive. Dinner is a three-course set menu served at 18:30, so please book ahead and we will cook for you. For large groups, it helps to let us know in advance.
Do I need a 4x4 to get to you?
No. Sani Pass Road is tarred all the way from Underberg to the cafe, so any car is fine. You only need a 4x4 if you carry on up Sani Pass itself, which starts at the border post further up the road.
How far are you from Underberg and Himeville?
About 20 km from Underberg and 15 km from Himeville. We are 10.5 km on Sani Pass Road, on the left as you drive towards the pass, just before the Sani Pass Hotel.
Can we watch the cows being milked?
Yes. Our Jersey cows are hand-milked every day at 7:30 and 14:30. Ask at the counter and we will show you the way to the dairy.
Can I go hiking from the cafe?
The walking trails on the farm are for guests of Sani Lodge & Cottages. If you are staying at the lodge, ask at reception for a map. For guided hikes in the area, Drakensberg Adventures runs tours from the same property.
Are children and dogs welcome?
Children are very welcome, and Paint on Clay is a favourite with families. Well-behaved dogs on a lead are welcome outdoors in the garden.
Do you cater for vegetarians, vegans and allergies?
Yes. We cater for vegetarians and vegans, and please tell us about any allergies when you order so we can guide you through the menu.
Staying in the area?
Sani Lodge & Cottages is on the same farm, 50 metres from the cafe, with rooms, cottages and camping.
